What is Reiki?
Reiki is a powerful stress-relief and relaxation technique which promotes physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health and well-being.
A central idea in Reiki is that an unseen "life force energy" (Ki or Chi) flows through each person. If this energy is low or blocked, a person can more easily become ill or feel stress. When the energy is high, a person is more able to experience health and happiness.
Imagine a river that flows easily and effortlessly through a community or village. The river brings water for the village to drink, bathe and water their gardens or crops. The river also brings fish to nourish the village, and may even be a source of transportation and trade. The village may view this river as a very important "life force." In many ways the river sustains or enhances the life of the people living near it.
The village can be seriously impacted if the river becomes low or blocked. A low river means less water for drinking, bathing and gardens. It can also mean fish and canoes or boats are unable to travel the river, reducing the food supply, trade and travel. At worst, having no river means no water, no food, no trade or transportation.
Imagine your body, mind, heart and spirit make up this village, and the river is your Chi, or "life force energy." You may not be able to "see" this energy, but it is a vital part of your well-being and functioning. If your energy is low or blocked, it impacts the functioning of your village, of your body, mind, heart and spirit, making you more susceptable to illness and stress.
Reiki was developed in Japan by Mikao Usui nearly 100 years ago. The name Reiki is derived from the Japanese pronunciation of two Chinese characters, "rei" (spirit) and "ki" (life force energy). So, Reiki means, spiritually guided life force energy. And that is what practitioners do - spiritually guide life force energy into clients.
Reiki practitioners guide this healing life force energy into the client's system, breaking up energy blocks and replenishing the client's own life force energy. Only pure energy from the Universe can be given to the client. The client does not receive any energy belonging to the practitioner, so there is no risk of taking on someone else's "bad energy." Reiki works on a holistic level, meaning it treats the whole person simultaneously - body, mind, heart, spirit. Reiki is simple, natural and completely safe - in fact, many hospitals, nurses. massage therapists, and counselors are learning and using Reiki in their work.
Reiki is easy to learn and passed on from teacher (Reiki Master) to student at training seminars and workshops. At a Reiki training, the student learns about Reiki and various techniques, and then is "attuned" by the Reiki Master. There is no prerequisit to becoming a Reiki practitioner.
While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion and can be practiced and received by people of any religious or spiritual background. There are no beliefs you must hold in order to receive or practice Reiki, although it is recommended that practitioners live and act in a way that promotes harmony with others. People of many religious backgrounds receive and practice Reiki regularly. In this way, Reiki is for everyone!
